Timothy Matney

Associate Professor

Dr. Matney has been involved in field archaeology since 1983 and has participated in excavations and surveys in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Israel, Azerbaijan, Britain and the US. His primary area of expertise is the archaeology of southwestern Asia, especially Mesopotamia and Anatolia.

Dr. Matney's theoretical interests include ancient urbanization and city planning. He has excavated extensively at two urban centers in southeastern Turkey: Titris Hoyuk (1994-1999) and Ziyaret Tepe (1997-present). At these two ancient cities, Dr. Matney has pursued a comprehensive study of daily life, city planning and the impact of urbanization on social and physical environments.
