The Department of Classical Studies, Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Akron invites applications for the position of Department Chair.

The University of Akron is a metropolitan, open-enrollment state university with 24,000 students. The University is ranked in the Carnegie Foundation’s "Doctoral/Research Universities – Intensive" category and has been chosen as one of the twelve cluster leaders in the Carnegie Academy for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

This undergraduate department offers a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Anthropology, minors in both Anthropology and Classical Studies and a certificate in Field Archaeology; a major in Classical Studies has been approved and awaits implementation. The Department's full-time faculty includes two classicists (one is non-tenure track), five anthropologists representing archaeology, cultural and physical anthropology (two are non-tenure track), and fifteen part-time colleagues. We teach 1,200 students per semester, including 60 majors in Interdisciplinary Anthropology and 30 minors in Classical Studies. The department is ranked among the top three in the College of Arts and Sciences by the Delaware Study measures and has significant endowment resources.

The department is committed to faculty and student research through collaborative projects in the community and abroad. In 2004 sixteen faculty projects generated more than $186,236 in outside support.

The candidate must be a full professor in anthropology or archaeology at his or her present institution. A successful candidate for Department Chair should possess relevant administrative experience for this position, including such areas as obtaining external research support, developing new programs, interdisciplinary collaboration, and initiatives for improved student retention. The candidate should have an active research agenda which must complement existing faculty interests. A strong candidate should have a collaborative style of leadership, be able to articulate a clear vision for the department and its relationship to the college, and should be able to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students. We seek an experienced leader committed to undergraduate teaching and scholarship, and able to represent the department effectively within and beyond the University. Within the department, the Department Chair must have a concern for the issues and needs of part-time as well as full-time colleagues. An appreciation and support for diversity within all units of the university is important. Salary will be competitive.

Akron is a vibrant city of 200,000 people in the midst of a downtown renaissance. Cleveland with its outstanding cultural and scientific resources is a short drive away.
