KATHRYN "KATY" KUNSMAN passed away on September 21, 2002 at the age of 22, from complications related to Cystic Fibrosis. Katy was the loving daughter of Charles and Cynthia Kunsman, dear sister of Betsy Kunsman and friend to many University of Akron students. As a remembrance, the Kunsman family suggested contributions to the Katy Kunsman Memorial Fund at Church of the Epiphany, 21000 Lake Shore Blvd., Euclid, OH. Katy was a UA student and (as mentioned above) the daughter of Charles "Chuck" Kunsman, UA Ocasek Natatorium Aquatics Director, UA Faculty Member and long time supporter of the University of Akron Water Polo Club.

It is through Chuck's guidance and tremendous ongoing assistance that the UA Water Polo Club is able to exist, let alone experience any success. Our club was very pleased to make an initial donation to the Katy Kunsman Memorial Fund this past October. In hopes of making an even more meaningful ongoing contribution we hosted the inaugural Katy Kunsman Memorial Invitational Tournament on April 5-6, 2003 in place of our annual spring invitational tournament and raised a significant donation to the Memorial Fund. To better correspond with the time of Katy's passing we are pleased to shift the tournament to this October, and plan to continue to host it in the fall annually thereafter in Katy's honor. Half of all contributions/sponsorships will go directly to the Katy Kunsman Memorial Fund at the Church of The Epiphany, of which half of those funds (twenty five percent of the total contribution/sponsorship) will fund Cystic Fibrosis Research. The balance of all contributions/sponsorships will remain with the UA Water Polo Club to fund club expenses. Please make checks payable to the University of Akron or The Katy Kunsman Memorial Fund. Please check with your tax advisor as your kind contribution may well be tax deductible. The tournament itself will be a six to possibly ten team (comprised of collegiate or regional club teams) invitational tournament with approximately 16-20 games in total. An estimated 150-200 copies of a tournament program will be published which will acknowledge the gift of each contributor/sponsor and will also contain advertising space (inside front cover, inside & outside of the back cover, portions of individual pages) for any organization interested in making a more substantial gift and also receiving some further publicity. For major gifts/sponsorships there may also be space available at the Ocasek Natatorium (ONAT) throughout the tournament to display promotional materials or signage, advertising banners, and/or on our club web site (http://www3.uakron.edu/aquatics/index.html) etc. which we will gladly arrange directly with the sponsors.
