7100: 100/101 SURVEY OF HISTORY OF ART I/II
Course Description: A lecture course that will introduce students to the history of art. Survey of Art History provides and overview of art from its prehistorica beginnings to the modern day. This history is approached chronolgically.
Rationale: To provide students with exposure to the full spectrum of the history of art. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in looking at art, describing, and writing about art. Students should develop and appreciation and an understanding of the panorama of past artistic production. Further, they should begin to develop skills in fomral analysis, advanced vocabulary, and critical thinking.
Course Objectives:
1. To understand the overall chronology of art history.
2. To be able to conduct a formal analysis.
3. To promote writing skills.
4. To promote critical thinking.
5. To consider the evaluation of artistic accomplishment within the context of the society in which it was made.
6. To analyze the artistic process and techniques so that the student can betgter understand the role of an artist in any given period.
7. To promote an understanding of and tolerance for social differences.
