1980's - Mid-1990's
As Graduate Advisor for the Department of English, Dr. James Egan heard echos of the same questions he had been receiving through the years from the undergraduates, "Besides teaching, what can I do with a degree in English?" Egan took these questions seriously because he was aware that a very small percentage of undergraduates continue their studies after receiving their B.A.'s. He also knew that a large number of those who do go on to enroll in graduate studies, view the M.A. as a terminal degree. Egan's search for answers to his students' questions led him to the campus of Ohio State University where he discovered an exciting career-related student service mechanism he proposed to emulate. He returned to Akron determined to set in motion a program where UA liberal arts undergraduates and graduates could receive focused help in such activities as resume writing, interviewing, and job search. He, along with the help of a single graduate student, started the English Department Careers Program out of his office .
The first few years were spent developing the foundation for the ever-expanding
program we see today.
1994
- 1997
It was during this period that Egan began developing an internship base using local and on-campus contacts. These sponsors numbered a mere 28 when the first interns were placed during Fall 1996, but the excitement of the participating students indicated that the Program was on the road to success. Academic credit was extended to interning English students during the Fall 1997 session, marking another milestone. The degree to which the Program was advancing encouraged personnel to approach Dr. Roger Creel, Dean of Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, with a proposal to extend services into other departments within the college.
Spring 1997 saw the inclusion of Humanities and Social Sciences students
as recipients of Program services and a program name change to A&S
Careers Program.
1998
- Present
The internship base grew to include over 165 sponsors and now offers over 365 positions for those declared majors of Buchtel College who realize the importance of practical experience before graduation. Program endeavors attracted the attention of English Alumna, Judy Read, in 1999. A visit to the office, which was still housed within the Department of English, caused Read to determine that the Program had outgrown its quarters and a move was needed. Once again the support of the Dean resulted in great changes for the Program. On April 26, 2000, a newly decorated suite in Olin Hall 325 was dedicated to the A&S Careers Program. The suite houses a 500+ resource lending library, a computer workroom , and a conference room where mock-interviewing sessions are held. One-on-one career counseling in job search and document preparation is available, and both department-specific workshops and internships continue to grow. Winter session saw the addition of all departments in the Natural Sciences Division, bringing the total to eighteen consortium members and allowing the Program to provide career-related services to over 3,000 students.
The latest endeavor begun in Fall 2004 is an Arts and Sciences Dossier
Service through which alums can confidentially channel their documents
in future graduate school or employment searches.
