all liberal arts majors, students earning degrees in Sociology possess
numerous marketable skills sought by employers in business, health professions,
the criminal justice system, social services, and government. The
ability to communicate well, both verbally and in a written format; to
critically analyze and solve problems; to learn new information quickly
and thoroughly; and to bring individual insight to a team format are the
transferable skills which will hold a sociology major in good stead after
graduation.
Sociology
is a good pre-professional degree for individuals interested in law, education,
medicine, social work, and counseling.
Whether or not a student of sociology goes on to receive a graduate degree, good grades, a willingness to relocate, and perseverance can help an individual with a Bachelors degree secure a position in any of the following areas:
OUTLOOK ACCORDING TO BLS OOHANDBOOK 2006-07 Overall employment of social scientists is expected to grow more slowly than average for all occupations through 2014. However, projected growth rates vary by specialty. Competition will remain keen for social science positions. Many jobs in policy, research, or marketing for which social scientists qualify are not advertised exclusively as social scientist positions. Because of the wide range of skills and knowledge possessed by the social scientists discussed in this Handbook statement, many compete for jobs with other workers, such as market and survey researchers, psychologists, engineers, urban and regional planners, and statisticians. [S]ociologists will find jobs
in policy or research. Sociologists may find work conducting policy
research for consulting firms and nonprofit organizations, and their knowledge
of society and social behavior may be used by a variety of companies in
product development, marketing, and advertising. Job growth will be very
slow in the Federal Government, a key employer of social scientists.
