CREDIT, PAID, VOLUNTEER

HOW IMPORTANT IS CREDIT?

Some A&S Careers Program sponsors feel that the seriousness of the student is reflected in the student's decision to secure a position requiring accompanying academic coursework.  They, therefore, ask that credit be mandatory for their internship positions.

Because credit can aid in fulfilling a department's 300-level coursework requirements, many students in Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences personally choose the credit option.  The mandatory coursework is determined, and directed, by the individual department advisor following department guidelines.

The number of hours that the student must participate weekly at the internship site is determined by the number of credits desired under the individual department's quidelines and the demands of the individual sponsors.   Total on-site hours vary, but ASCP participation requirements are:    4+ hours = 1 credit;    8+ hours = 2 credits;      14 + hours = 3 credits.

Students, in addition to fulfilling specific department academic requirements, are required to maintain an open line of dialogue with the A&S Careers Program and to evaluate the internship experience through an end-of-the-term report and an exit interview for each internship experienced.

WHY VOLUNTEER WHEN I NEED MONEY?

All of us want our endeavors appreciated.  An internship is work, and we all want payment for the work we do.  While the Program does offer various paid positions with salaries ranging from slightly above minimum wage to over $400/wkly, payment for a job well done is not necessarily limited to a tangible paycheck.

The hands-on experience gained through internship participation is an invaluable complement to the knowledge gained in a classroom setting.   The practical skills acquired in a field of interest before graduation is the plus that today's employers are not only seeking, but expecting, from recent graduates.

The pluses of accepting a volunteer position can be found in the flexible hours, diverse work settings, and benefits of real-world skill applications.

Remember that the earlier you start, the more time you have to experience several internships.  You will have more time to decide if your initial impression of an occupation was valid and if that occupation is one in which you one day hope to be employed.

Buchtel College students who have participated in multiple internships have discovered that the world of possibilities for their talents are endless!
