WHAT EXACTLY ARE INTERNSHIPS? Internships are cooperative efforts of the A&S Careers Program in The University of Akron Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, on-campus departments, and local off-campus organizations to provide Buchtel College majors with opportunities to establish a closer connection between their academic studies and the world of work. Students establish this connection by honing critical reading and analytical writing skills, logical thought processes and problem solving skills, and personal interaction skills through practical application supervised by sponsors in such fields as law, health, education, business, and media which are found in the both public and private sectors, for-profit and non-profit segments.
Internship experiences can last one semester, a full academic year, a full
calendar year or a summer depending on the desires of the student and the
needs of the sponsor. Weekly schedules range from four hours to 20+
depending on both the student's and the sponsor's schedules. All
internships may be taken for credit by eligible majors. There is
no registration fee, and many positions are salaried.
Students should consider investigating internship possibilities as early in their academic career as possible. The sooner the excursion begins, the more experiences the student can have. Freshmen should begin developing resumes and cover letters while attending career-related on-campus workshops. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who meet eligibility requirements may participate fall, spring or summer semesters in multiple internship placements throughout their academic experience.
Seniors who find themselves in their last semester without practical experience
in a field of their interest should not be discouraged. There should
still be time to secure an internship locally or on campus.
The A&S Careers Program is based in the belief that the vocational skills of Arts and Sciences majors and the general marketability of their degrees are, in part, the responsibilities of academic departments and student services. Therefore the Program's goal is to prepare these majors for successful, ethical careers through on-the-job training and experience in numerous activities, using practical skills such as writing, editing, personal interaction, and creative thinking.
Because acquiring professional work experience before graduation
is important, we offer students one of the most practical methods of doing
this--internship participation!
