The inaugural season for the Zips swimming and diving team will be the 1998-99 campaign. There are currently seven Mid-American Conference schools that sponsor women's swimming and diving: Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois and Toledo. When Buffalo joins the conference, that will bring the total number of MAC teams to nine.
"I'm excited about the addition of women's swimming and diving to our intercollegiate athletic program," said Bobinski. "We have an outstanding facility in the Ocasek Natatorium, strong local/regional high school and club programs to recruit from, and a very competitive conference affiliation. With an enthusiastic and experienced coach like Brian Vereb leading the way, we believe this program can move rapidly from start-up to contender."
Brian Vereb (pronounced VER-eb), a North East, Pa. native, will be the inaugural head coach for the Akron women's swimmimg and diving program. Vereb is a 1992 graduate of The College of Wooster, where he earned his degree in exercise physiology. He then worked as an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming programs at Wooster for three seasons before moving to Ball State, where he worked with the Cardinals' women's program for two seasons. During his tenure with Ball State, the women's program posted its first undefeated season and entered the national rankings. Vereb is currently an assistant women's coach at Fresno State.
The Ocasek Natatorium will be the home for the new swimming and diving team. It was constructed at a cost of $6.5 million in 1986 and '87, and opened its doors in January, 1988. It houses an Olympic-sized (50 meters long, 25 meters wide) pool, and was named in honor of former Ohio senator and UA professor emeritus Oliver Ocasek. The Zips have never had a varsity team in the Ocasek Natatorium, although the Zips sponsored men's swimming and diving for 34 consecutive years, from 1951-52 through the 1984-85 academic year.
On the women’s side, the Zips captured first and second place in three events. Sophomore Jasmine Reynolds (Columbus/Brookhaven) captured the 400m dash (58.12), with freshman Lisa Clark (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) taking second. Two Zips took the top spots in the high jump. Sophomore Karen Beasley (Blakeslee/Edon) won the event with a jump of 5’6” while senior Lisa Madick (Uniontown/Green) had a jump of 5’4”. Freshman Heather Globig (Madison) won the pole vault (9’ 6 1/4”) with Beasley finishing second (9’ 2 1/4”). Sophomore Christi Smith (Columbus/Bexley) won the long jump with a leap of 20’ 1 1/2”.
For the men, junior Jeff Whittaker (Canton/Jackson) won the high jump (6’8”) while sophomore Steve Toth (Rocky River) took the crown in the pole vault competition (16’ 4 3/4”). Senior Barron Pringle (Middletown) finished second in the 55m high hurdles with a time of 7.55.
The men’s and women’s teams are now geared up to take part at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track Championships. The meet will be held this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27-28) at Kent.
Rossi graduated from The University of Akron in 1956 and began teaching and coaching at Garfield High School. He only left the Rams only once for a short time, to take over as the head football coach at Buchtel High School for five seasons (1964-68).
Roxanne Allen’s Zips women (11-15, 7-8 MAC) are aiming to hand the Golden Flashes their first MAC loss on Wednesday at the MAC Center. Kent nipped Akron, 75-70, on Jan. 24 at JAR Arena. The Zips have dropped three in a row.
UA athletic ticket manager Brian Moore said that the game is a Mid-American Conference event and that ticket prices have been set at $10 for lower reserved, $8 for upper reserved, and $5 for general admission. Students can purchase general admission tickets for $2 with a valid UA ID.
The Zips could clinch one of the four spots on Thursday night when they play host to Kent. A win over the Golden Flashes (which would also give Akron the MAC East Division title), coupled with a Western Michigan win over the Toledo Rockets on Wednesday, would assure the Zips of hosting a quarterfinal game.
The change was made to enable CBS to televise the Penn State at Pittsburgh game, which is now set for Sept. 19.
Coach Lee Owens' ballclub opens its 1998 season Sept. 5 at home against defending Mid-American Conference champion Marshall in the 45th annual Acme-Zip Game. Kickoff will be a 7 p.m. The remaining start times are TBA.

Akron is now in control of its own destiny as far as hosting a first-round MAC tournament game is concerned. Akron is tied with Toledo for the fourth seed, but would win the tie-breaker with the Rockets by virtue of its 73-56 victory on Saturday. Tournament quarterfinal games will be held at campus sites of the top four seeds on February 28. The semifinals and championship game will be held at SeaGate Centre in Toledo on March 3-4.
“We have a lot of players coming back next year,” said Sweitzer, “but Miranda will fill a definite need for us. She is a player with go-to capability, a great defensive player, and an all-around solid player.
A sophomore guard, Bosley averaged 18 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of wins over Eastern Michigan (69-67) and Toledo (73-56) last week.
On the men’s side, junior Mike Slomovitz (Orange) won the high jump (6-9) and finished second in the long jump (23-6 3/4), while senior Barron Pringle (Middletown) captured the 60m hurdles (8.27).
A native of Richfield, Ohio, Snowball played his collegiate football at Boston University, graduating in 1988, and served four seasons as an assistant at Purdue University before joining the staff at Akron in 1995. Snowball, 31, was a standout quarterback at Revere High School in the early 1980s.
Head coach Lee Owens indicated a search already is under way to find a successor.
“This is our best recruiting class to date,” declared the Zips’ 41-year-old field boss. “In our prior three classes we were building a foundation. With this class, we were able to more position specific.”
Seventeen of the 20 signees currently are seniors at their respective high schools. Three signees hail from California junior colleges: LB James Cochran (City College of San Francisco), LB Louis Mackey (Gavilan College), and DL Will Scott (Chabot College).
Owens and his coaching staff have maintained a consistent recruiting policy, with half of the class from Northeast Ohio, one quarter from western Pennsylvania and one quarter from the rest of Ohio, Michigan and out of state.
“Our pressing needs were at the defensive line and linebacker positions,” said Owens. “We believe we’ve recruited immediate impact players at defensive end, linebacker and fullback. Improving our team speed also was a priority, and we’ve attracted 10 players who are sub-4.6 in the 40, with the rest at 5.0 or better. Another area of concern was special teams. We’ve signed five kick and punt returners and seven TB-LB type players who can cover. We also were determined to maintain our squad’s character and academic reputation. This class should uphold our high standards in both areas. Last fall semester, our team GPA of 2.5 was the program’s highest in years.
“We also recruited young men who want to be at Akron and chose Akron over noteworthy schools,” added Owens. “This group is committed to making our program a contender in the MAC.”
Nine senior letter winners completed their eligibility last fall, with key losses being Jamie Reader and Chris Rooney at fullback, Nate Boyd at middle linebacker, and Corey Christian at defensive end. Akron begins its seventh season as a member of the Mid-American Conference this fall. UA opens its 1998 season hosting defending MAC champion Marshall on Sept. 5 in the 45th annual Acme-Zip Game.
“The coaching staff did a great job of getting our program involved with a high quality group of prospects. We’re anxious to have the guys on campus and to get the 1998 season started,” Owens concluded.
