November 24: Akron Baseball Inks Pitcher And Outfielder

UA head baseball coach Dave Fross announced that Mike Bell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Justin Reisinger (Clarksburg, Ohio) have signed to play their collegiate baseball for the Zips.

Bell, a left-handed-hitting outfielder, hit .418 for Baldwin High School last season with an on-base percentage of over .500, and used good speed to help him swipe 27 bases. He is a two-time selection to the All-West Legion Showcase at Three Rivers Stadium and was a 1997 Team One Regional Showcase selection at Lexington, Ky. Bell, a two-time silver medalist in the Keystone Games, was also a member of the 1996 State Legion All-Star Team.

Reisinger, a right-handed pitcher at Adena High School, was named first-team All-Scioto Valley Conference as a junior when he recorded an 8-0 mark on the mound with a 1.21 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 58 innings. He led the league in hitting (.490) and RBI (23), and was second in strikeouts and wins. Reisinger helped lead Adena H.S. to a 15-6 record and the Division III District Finals last season.

UA Athletics Receives NCAA Certification Notice

The NCAA announced that The University of Akron is one of 19 schools that received certification last week. The announcement comes at the end of a year-long review process. The review is to help ensure integrity in the institution’s operations and to assist athletic departments in improving their programs. A designation of certified means that an institution has shown that it operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.

UA Women’s Basketball Signs Second Recruit

Head women’s basketball coach Roxanne Allen has announced that Felecia Bell, from North High School in Minneapolis, Minn., has signed a national letter of intent to play her college basketball at The University of Akron. Bell joins Sierra Cooper of Herndon, Va., as Allen’s early signees this year.

Bell, a 6-2 guard, showed her versatility and strong ball-handling ability as she earned All-City honors last season. North High School reached the AAA Minnesota State High School championship game to cap off Bell’s junior campaign.

“Felecia is an extremely versatile player who handles the ball very well,” said Allen. “We’re really excited about these two early signees, because they’re exactly the type of player that we want to bring in. They can pick up the tempo of a game, and they are both very academically inclined.”

Both Bell and Cooper will enroll at Akron for the 1998-99 school year.

Two Zips Named To MAC All-Freshman Team

Akron had two athletes named to the MAC All-Freshman Volleyball Team. Julie McDivitt (Windham) and Lyndsay Spresser (Portage, Mich.) were honored by the league for their outstanding play this past season. Among their highlights for the season, McDivitt, who led the team in digs (421) and was second in service aces (27), recorded 37 digs in a match against Ball State which ranked her second on UA’s all-time list for digs in a single match. Spresser, who led the Zips with a .281 hitting percentage, had 11 block assists in a match against Western Michigan ranking her sixth all-time.

The Zips finished the year with a 16-17 record overall and a mark of 5-11 in the Mid-American Conference.

Kickers Bypassed For NCAA Tournament

Despite winning the Mid-American Conference regular-season title for the third time in five years, coach Ken Lolla's Zips (14-5-2, 5-1-1 MAC) were not extended an at-large bid for the 1997 NCAA Soccer Tournament. The announcement was made Monday at 5 p.m.

Akron, which had cracked the national rankings at No. 25 in the next-to-last week of the regular season, dropped the MAC Tournament championship game to Bowling Green, 1-0, on November 9 in Oxford. The Falcons then defeated Patriot League member Colgate in a play-in game and will now play at Marquette in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Volleyball Campaign Comes To A Close

Coach Mike Sweitzer's volleyball team closed its '97 season last Saturday evening with a 3-2 loss to Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The Zips finished 16-17 (5-11 MAC) and did not qualify for the eight-team league tourney.

Sophomore setter Kim Schaper (Kalamazoo, Mich.) set a school mark for assists per game (12.1), while her season total of 1,458 ranks second on UA's all-time list. The team's lone senior was Rachel Phillips (Tallmadge).

Norris 53rd At X-C Regional

Women Cagers Entertain Wright State; Men Open At 10th-Ranked Xavier

The UA women's basketball team will open its home schedule this Thursday (November 20) against Wright State at James A. Rhodes Arena. Tipoff is at 7 o'clock. Coach Roxanne Allen's squad dropped its first game of the '97-'98 season at Butler on Saturday, 74-58. Freshman forward/center Cheryl Bowles (Kansas City, Mo.) struck for 10 points in her debut. The Zips begin Mid-American Conference play Saturday at Marshall.

The UA men have been impressive in two home exhibition wins, scoring more than 100 points and shooting better than 50 percent each time out. Coach Dan Hipsher's club is set to open its '97-'98 slate at 10th-ranked Xavier in Cincinnati on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Musketeers slipped out of JAR Arena last December 21 with a 113-111 win in triple overtime, surviving a 44-point outburst by Zips star Jimmal Ball (Canton/Timken).

Hipsher's anticipated lineup is George Phillips (Franklin Park, Ill./Leyden) and Chris Hahn (Alexandria, Ind.) at forwards, Ryan Andrick (Akron/Manchester) at center, and Scott Gooden (Akron/Firestone) and Ball at guards.

November 13: Ball Profiled In Sports Illustrated

The University of Akron's dynamic sophomore point guard Jimmal Ball (Canton/Timken) is profiled in Sports Illustrated's College Basketball preview issue which is on newsstands this week.

Ball and Eastern Michigan's Earl Boykins represent the Mid-American Conference in a survey of the nation's best under-6' players. A two-page spread dedicated to these small stars includes Aaron Hutchins of Marquette, Terrell McIntyre of Clemson, Shawnta Rogers of George Washington, Tyson Wheeler of Rhode Island and Ball. The magazine's cover boy is Duke guard Steve Wojciechowski. Boykins, who hails from Cleveland (Central Catholic), is singled out for a feature story.

Ball is the youngest of all the "small" players profiled. The 5-10, 170-pounder has been tabbed first-team preseason All-MAC, as selected by the MAC News Media Association. He averaged 17.1 points per game a year ago and was among conference leaders in scoring, three-point goals, assists and steals. Ball played the final month of last season with a fracture in his lower back and still earned selection to three Freshman All-America teams. He was the unanimous choice for MAC Freshman of the Year.

Akron opens its 1997-98 season November 22 at 10th-ranked Xavier. Ball hit for 44 points in a 113-111 triple-overtime loss to the Musketeers last December 21.

November 10: Norris To Represent UA at NCAA Cross Country Regionals

Senior Nate Norris (Elyria/Catholic) will represent The University of Akron this Saturday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships, hosted by Indiana University.

Golfers Crack Rolex Regional Rankings

The UA men's golf team has cracked the Rolex District 4 rankings. The Zips check in at No. 5, behind Minnesota, Kent, Miami of Ohio and Northwestern.

Coach Rick Jones' squad won the prestigious 23-team Louisville Persimmon Ridge Invitational and placed second and third in two other fall tournaments.

Time Changes For Women's, Men's Twin Bill

To accommodate WB-55's TV broadcast of the November 25 Akron-Capital men's basketball game, the UA department of athletics today announced changes in tip-off times.

The Akron-Youngstown State women's game will start at 5:30 now, instead of 6:00, with the men's game to start at 8:00, rather than 8:30 as originally slated.

WB-55 also will carry Zips home men's games against Eastern Michigan (February 5) and Kent (February 19).

UA Soccer Team Runner-Up at MAC Tournament

Akron's school-record shutout streak of 669 minutes and three seconds came to an end on Sunday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio, as Bowling Green defeated the Zips, 1-0, in the MAC Tournament championship game. Junior forward Allen Eller (Mentor), senior defenseman Desmond Johnston (Johannesburg, South Africa) and senior goalkeeper Bill Wahl (Chagrin Falls) were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts. Wahl's shutout streak of 748:36 also came to an end at 55:54 of the championship match, when BGSU scored the only goal of the contest.

Coach Ken Lolla's Zips (14-5-2, 5-1-1 MAC) still have an outside chance for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The bracket will be announced Monday, November 17.

Zips Spikers Clinging To MAC Tourney Hopes

Coach Mike Sweitzer's volleyball team dropped two home matches to Bowling Green (3-2) on Friday night and Miami (3-0) on Saturday. The Zips volleyball team is now 16-15 (5-9 MAC), and is in peril of missing the cut for the Mid-American Conference tournament.

In the five-game loss to BGSU on Friday, sophomore setter Kim Schaper (Kalamazoo, Mich.) turned in her seventh 60+ assist performance of the season, notching 62 assists on the evening. She needs just 22 more assists to surpass Patti Godzinski's 1995 season total for second place on UA's all-time list. She has already surpassed her freshman-year total of 1,338, having recorded 1,377 assists thus far in 1997.

Ten Football Seniors Say Good-Bye

Ten Akron Zips football seniors will make their final appearance on Saturday at 1 o'clock at the Toledo Glass Bowl. Rejuvenated by a 45-35 win over rival Kent last Saturday, the Zips (2-8, 2-5 MAC) face the MAC West Division champion Rockets (8-1, 6-1).

The Zips will have their year-end banquet the following evening at the Martin Center, beginning at 5 o'clock. For ticket information, contact Nancy Stott at (330) 972-7466.

November 6: Zip Cager Bosley to Miss First Five Games With Back Injury

University of Akron basketball fans will have to wait to see Jami Bosley in a Zips uniform for the first time. Head coach Dan Hipsher announced today that the 6-0 guard from Massillon will be lost to the team for four weeks due to a fracture in the lower lumbar spine. Bosley will be placed in a brace on Friday and will miss the Zips' first five regular-season games. He is projected to return to the court on December 15, when Akron hosts Loyola (Chicago) at James A. Rhodes Arena. Bosley, who played his freshman campaign for The Ohio State University before transferring to Akron, sat out the 1996-97 season due to NCAA transfer regulations.

"I really feel bad for Jami," said Hipsher. "No one wants to play basketball more than him. When he walked off the floor Tuesday with his back in spasms, I guarantee you the tears were not due to the pain."

The injury is thought to have occurred over time and is attributed to the extremely active and aggressive style of play that Bosley has become known for, rather than any specific instance. "Due to Jami's commitment, I look for his rehab to go well," said Hipsher.

The Zips open the regular season on the road when they travel to Cincinnati on November 22 to meet Xavier.

November 3: Norris Leads Zips at Cross Country Championships

Senior Nate Norris (Elyria) continued his banner final season with the Blue and Gold harriers by capturing the 13th overall place at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships at Toledo on Saturday. Norris has been the men's top finisher in every race this season, including first-place finishes at the Black Squirrel Classic and the Tommy Evans Invitational to begin the season.

"We're obviously proud of what Nate has accomplished this season," said head coach Dennis Mitchell. "Especially when you consider how strong the MAC is in cross country and that we have two teams (Miami and Eastern Michigan) ranked in the top 15."

Norris will represent Akron in the NCAA District IV Championships on November 15 at Indiana.

Among the men's other leading finishers at the MAC Championships for the Zips were junior Mickey Andrade (Stow), who finished 42nd, and freshman Chris Rybicki (Olmsted Falls), who was 54th in the 8,000-meter race.

Freshman Laura Jones (Mentor) was the Zips' top finisher in the women's 5,000-meter race, crossing the line in the 64th spot, while senior Mary Matuk (Ravenna) finished in 72nd place.

UA Soccer Team Wins MAC Regular-Season Crown; Wahl Named MAC Player of the Week

The University of Akron soccer team has captured the Mid-American Conference regular-season title and will be the number-one seed entering the MAC Tournament. For head coach Ken Lolla and the Zips, it is the third MAC regular-season championship in the past five years. Akron finished the regular season with a record of 5-1-1 (12-4-2 overall), after playing to a 0-0 tie against Marshall in the last game of the regular season on Sunday at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips will now face No. 8 seed Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Akron defeated EMU 4-0 during the regular season.

Paced by junior Michael Apple (Copley) and freshman Christer Larsen (Bergen, Norway) each with 9 goals, the offense has done its job in scoring 45 goals on the season. It has been the UA defense, however, that has held the opponents in check. The defense, which has not allowed a goal in the past 433:10 of play, now has four consecutive shutouts to its credit (seven for the season) and has surrendered only three scores in the last nine matches. Senior goalkeeper Bill Wahl (Chagrin Falls) has not allowed a goal in the past 512:43. For his six-save shutout effort against the Thundering Herd on Sunday, Wahl has been named the MAC Player of the Week. This latest honor comes only one week after he received the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award.

Volleyball Splits Weekend on the Road

Coach Mike Sweitzer's volleyball team (16-13, 5-7 MAC) split a pair of conference matches on the road this weekend. The Zips fell to Marshall on Friday evening, 3-0, before turning the tables to defeat Ohio by the same margin in Athens on Saturday. Akron is still in competition for one of the positions in the MAC postseason tournament. The Zips will now bring their game back to JAR Arena, where they will play three of their last four matches starting this weekend, entertaining Bowling Green on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Miami on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Zips defeated the Falcons and lost to the RedHawks in matches earlier this season. The netters play their last match at home on November 12, when Northern Illinois comes to JAR Arena before closing the regular season on the road on November 15 at Western Michigan.
