It is clear that many people are concerned and confused about evolution. Although evolution has stronger scientific support than most scientific theories (LINK), anti-evolutionists have recently accelerated their attacks on this well-supported theory, confusing many people along the way. In Ohio, as in many parts of the country, a discussion about the teachings of the origins of biological diversity has heated up. Some see these discussions as pitting science against religion whereas others see these two important human endeavors as complementary and not necessarily in conflict over this topic.
The pages herein will present an argument for the latter interpretation: that the process of evolution by natural selection is in no way at odds with religion, and that both can coexist and be taught in courses relevant to the subject matter. We strongly argue that the theory of "Intelligent Design" is a supernatural theory for the creation of life and complexity on earth whereas the theory of evolution by natural selection is a scientific theory meant to explain the complexity of life in a testable, scientific format.
As scientists from a wide range of fields, we recognize that ignoring the ongoing public controversy will not help it to go away. There is no scientific debate about whether evolution occurs, and our hope is that this website will help you to learn more about this wondrous natural process. We hope that viewers of these pages will come away with a better understanding of what evolution by natural selection is all about, and how it differs substantially from the supernatural explanation proposed by the proponents of intelligent design. Once this difference is clear, then it should be clear that evolution is appropriate to be taught in a science classroom and that intelligent design is appropriate to be taught in a religious studies classroom.
We have assembled some information about the process of evolution by natural selection, links about the evidence in favor of evolution, about the attacks on science sponsored by anti-evolutionists, and about how science works. Click on some of the links on this page to further explore this topic.
