Academic Program
The Department of Biology offers the degree of Master of Science in biology.
The M.S. degree is obtained upon completion of required coursework and
a research thesis. Each student, in conjunction with a graduate committee,
plans coursework, seminars and research based upon the student's background
and interests. A total of 24 credits of coursework, 12 credits of research/thesis
and 4 credits of seminar are required for the degree.
Admission Requirements
An entering student must have an undergraduate degree with a major in biology
or the equivalent training.

A minimum grade point average of 2.75 (4.00=A) overall and a 3.00 average
in biology (minimum 32 semester hours or equivalent) is required for full
admission.

A minimum of one semester of organic chemistry is required.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) aptitude and the advanced test in biology
are required (Note: If you are unable to fulfill this requirement for the
coming fall semester a probationary period may be granted allowing you to start
your graduate studies while waiting to take the Biology GRE exam). For the
Biology subject test a minimum score in the 25% percentile is required effective
summer of 2003.

Foreign students are required to submit documentation of a passing score
on the TOEFL. Those applying for a teaching assistantship must also submit
documentation of a passing score on the TSE (Test of Spoken English).
Financial Assistance
Teaching Assistantships are available which include a stipend (increased
to $12,000 from $9,000 last year!) and a tuition scholarship. Summer research fellowship
and summer teaching assistantships are also available. Students applying
for a teaching assistantship should submit an application no later than
May 1 for an assistantship starting Fall semester of the same year. Applications
