Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is required for admission to your graduate program?

A: The following is a general list of requirements for admission.

  • A minimum grade point average of 3.00 (4.00=A) overall and a 3.00 average in biology (minimum 32 semester hours or equivalent) is required for full admission.
  • Competence in chemistry and mathematics is expected.
  • The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) advanced test in biology is required and a minimum score of 25th percentile or higher is required.
  • In addition to the graduate application a letter of interest indicating the proposed area of specialization is required. 
  • Foreign students, in addition to the above requirements, must have a First Class Degree (a four year degree if from a foreign institution), 220 or greater on the TOEFL for admission.  A score of 50 or greater on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) is required to qualify for a teaching assistantship.

Q: How do I apply for graduate studies in your department?

Q: What forms of financial aid do you offer?

A: Almost all of our full-time students are supported financially. This either takes the form of teaching assistantships which come with a monthly stipend and waiver of graduate tuition or research assistantships through funded research projects which also provide a monthly stipend as well as tuition remission.

Q: What financial aid can expect beyond the first year?

A: Once we have offered teaching assistantships as long as you remain in good standing with the graduate school and department you can expect continued financial aid for at least two years.

Q: When should I apply?

A: As soon as possible! We continuously review and accept students until all positions are filled. For those that want to be considered for teaching assistantships applications should be completed by the end of May at the latest for full consideration.

Q: What types of research can I do in your department?

A: We have faculty that span most areas of biology. Please look at our faculty research interests page to get an idea of the various projects that are on-going in the department. If you have any questions about particular projects please don't hesistate to inquire with individual factulty about their projects.
