MINOR IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Overview
All students at The University of Akron
can obtain a Minor in Entrepreneurship through which they can acquire
entrepreneurial skills related to starting or buying a small business,
working for a fast growth business or corporation, family business,
franchising, or non-profit entrepreneurship. The program has already
produced several successful new businesses in e-commerce, retail,
and service industries. The program has also assisted in the growth
of a variety of small businesses.
Entrepreneurship is more than a set of tools and techniques for starting and growing a business. It’s a mind-set, a creative way of looking at opportunities. Entrepreneurship is about doing what you love. It’s about creating different forms of wealth which include money, independence, power, and innovation. It’s also about challenge and persistence.
Interest in entrepreneurship has never been greater.
A recent survey found that more than 70 percent of high school seniors
wanted to own a business someday. In addition, small, fast-growth
companies create more than 80 percent of all new jobs. The rapidly
changing economy has created many opportunities for people who want
to become entrepreneurs.
The Program
The University of Akron ’s Fitzgerald
Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies recognizes the importance
of entrepreneurial education. The Institute has created an undergraduate
Minor in Entrepreneurship where students are exposed to creativity
and idea generation, opportunity recognition, feasibility studies,
marketing and financial plans, and business plans. Students learn
different facets of entrepreneurship from faculty who have all been
successful entrepreneurs. The innovative program allows students
to interact with entrepreneurs from the business community through
guest speaking engagements, field trips, internships, and small
business consulting projects.
