Klaus George Roy
Klaus George Roy was born in Vienna in 1924 and has lived in the
United States since 1940. A graduate of The Cambridge School of
Weston(1941), Boston University (1947) and Harvard University (1949),
he studied musicology with Karl Geiringer and composition with Walter
Piston. Between 1944 and 1946 he served as an information-education
officer in the U.S. Army. From 1948 to 1957 he was librarian and
instructor at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, and
between 1950 and 1957 was active as a regular contributing music critic
to the Christian Science Monitor. He has annotated over 150
recordings, and writen widely for national magazines. Since 1958, he
has served as Director of Publications and Program Book Editor of The
Cleveland Orchestra. He is the intermission host for the Orchestra's
local and nationally syndicated broadcasts originating from WCLV,
Cleveland. He has continued to teach and lecture in numerous series
and at various schools, including Case Western Reserve University and
the Cleveland Institute of Art. Mr. Roy has written music in virtually
all media, performed by leading artists and ensembles in the U.S. and
abroad (England, Holland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Brazil,
etc.). His catalogue includes an opera (TV, Boston 1957, staged and
conducted by Sarah Caldwell), incidental music for Shakespeare plays
(Cleveland 1973 and 1975), choral, chamber, organ and piano music, and
25 songs. He is currently (1975) at work on his Op. 100, a
bicentennial commission for youth choir. Fifteen of his compositions
are published. In 1965 he was awarded The Cleveland Arts Prize for his
creative contribution. A board member or trustee of numerous artistic
institutions, he is regarded as a "cultural activist", and also writes
occasionally on politics and other social issues
