ITEE Discusses the Topic:
Going Rogue IT Style: The implications
of rogue users inside and outside of the
organization
When a business unit
head doesn’t get something in the IT
budget, he circumvents policies and gets
it somehow. Another user is not
satisfied with the provided conferencing
system, so sets up a meeting at home
using Skype. With the exploding number
of choices available to end users
throughout the organization, are IT
policies and their enforcement becoming
a myth? Come to discuss the travails of
rogue users and what your peers are
doing about them.

ITEE Discusses the Topic:
"Delivering and Promoting Innovative
Business Value"
As the use
of IT/IS to facilitate business processes
and compete better continues to expand, CIOs
must deliver innovative services and
communicate their value to the business.
Join the ITEE as we consider the changing
perceptions of IT/IS as a service provider
and its role in delivering business value to
the organization.
ITEE Discusses
the
Topic: "Virtualization: Performance and
Prospects"
Virtualization has
given IT departments an unprecedented
cost reducing tool through server
consolidation, streamlined business
continuity, and access to the cloud. But
questions remain: can virtualized
servers really scale? Has virtualization
delivered the promised ROI? Can and
should IT take the next step to
virtualization on the desktop? How might
virtualization facilitate business
agility and repositioning IT as a
service?
Second Annual IT Career Camp
IT Career Camp is designed for
rising high school juniors and seniors

keynote speakers Rob Law (CIO, GE
Lighting) and AJ Hyland (President and
CEO, Hyland Software).
The event was held
on April 21 from 9am - 2pm in the
Student Union Ballroom. For more
information visit the
event home page.
ITEE Discusses the
Topic: "The Consumerization of IT and
Implications for the Organization"
With more than 80
tablet computers hitting the market this
year, and numerous smartphones and other
devices already proliferating, the
concept of a standard enterprise
computing infrastructure is being
stretched as never before. Come discuss
with your peers how you and they are
handling this avalanche of devices, and
what the implications are for
productivity, connectivity,
compatibility, security, architecture,
ROI, etc.
IT Shadow Day
Junior, senior, and graduate
students majoring in Information Systems
are invited to attend the IT Shadow Day
on February 22nd from 9 am to 1 pm.
Classes are cancelled in observation of
President's Day. Students will get an
overview of the IT department, tour the
facilities, and then shadow an IT
employee as they carry out their daily
tasks. Breakfast and lunch are provided,
students must arrange transportation.
ITEE Discusses
the Topic: "The Collaboration
Challenge"
For every team that has mastered making
platforms such as SharePoint the heart
of efficient and effective
collaboration, many others are mired in
emails, flattened by perpetually
circulating files, and amazed that
empowering technologies are now
imprisoning. Come to the ITEE and share
your successes and challenges in using
collaboration software to manage
documents and knowledge, improve team
communication and productivity, and
ultimately, to affect the bottom line.
ITEE Discusses
the Topic: "Assimilating Mobile
and Consumer Devices into the IT
Infrastructure"
With Androids and iPhones, Blackberries,
iPads, and the next wave of tablet
computers lurking in the shadows, IT
departments are racing to accommodate
the demands of executives down the line
to plug these devices into the corporate
infrastructure. While presenting
security and other challenges, they also
represent an opportunity for
"mobilizing" enterprise applications.
This ITEE session will be devoted to
discussing the implications of the new
wave of mobile and consumer devices.
Share your experiences and learn from
the experiences of your peers in this
discussion led by George Mehok, CIO at
Revol Wireless.
ITEE Discusses
the Topic: "Is your company ready
for Windows 7 and Office 2010
deployment?"
Microsoft recently announced that
Windows 7 has surpassed the 150 million
unit sales. That means 15% of all the
PCs in the world (nearly a billion) are
now running Windows 7, making the new
operating system (OS) the fastest
adopted OS in history.
But the
good news for Microsoft may not be the
same for your IT department. A PC
refresh will not only take time and cost
money, but proper planning and
prioritization with other complex
projects like deploying Office 2010 is
critical.
If these are some of
your IT dilemmas, IT Executive Exchange
(ITEE) will be holding a discussion on
September 10, 2010 that should be of
interest to you. The next ITEE meeting
will discuss some of the features and
best practices to help you make the
decision to upgrade to Windows 7/Office
2010 or not.
ITEE Discusses the Topic: "ITIL
and COBIT"
This session of IT
Executive Exchange
will address how
companies are
implementing
Information
Technology
Infrastructure
Library (ITIL) and
Control Objectives
for Information
Technology (COBIT)
frameworks. An
expert will seed our
discussion with
introductory
remarks, and we will
address questions
such as: How does an
IT organization go
about adopting and
integrating ITIL and
COBIT? How are they
different? Is it
expensive? What are
the challenges and
benefits of
implementing either
or both?
According to
Wikipedia, ITIL is a
set of concepts and
practices for
managing Information
Technology services,
IT development and
IT operations and
COBIT is a set of
best practices
(framework) for
information
technology
management created
by the Information
Systems Audit and
Control Association
(ISACA), and the IT
Governance Institute
(ITGI) in 1996.

ITEE Discusses
the Topic:
"Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger: Learning
from Our Best and Worst IT practices"
Every IT/IS organization
has some IT processes that they are
particularly proud of, and others they would
like to (relatively speaking) sweep under
the carpet. In this working session, ITEE
members will share their best and worst IT
practices to enlighten, inform, assist, and
amuse the participants.
The meeting will be held on March 26,
2010. Please visit
IT Executive Exchange page for details.
ITEE Board
Members discuss the topic
"Managing IT Innovation"
This session of ITEE addressed how companies are using IT to
encourage innovation in their organizations. Are innovations brought to the
business from the IT side, or does the business side tell IT what to do? How do
firms ensure that they are not missing important new technologies? Who is
responsible for defining the benefits that are supposed to come from the
innovations, and who follows up to make sure they are realized?
The meeting was held on January 22, 2010. Please visit
IT Executive
Exchange page for details.

What you need
to know to stay off the front page of the
WSJ ?
On any given day the Wall Street Journal
contains sad reports of firms that have
permitted data breaches, been victims of
computer crime, or in other ways have
suffered from insufficient computer
security. Declining stock prices, dropping
consumer confidence, monetary and trade
secret losses, civil and criminal
penalties—consequences can be dire. Come
share with your peers information about how
you perceive the latest threats and what you
are doing to combat them.

What You Need to Know About Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) ?
At the last CITe
Lunch and Learn Series
Aaron Geh presented search engine optimization (SEO).
At a high level, students learned the basics
of SEO, including how it works and why it is
important. In addition, they learned why it
is so important to drive more qualified
traffic to the web sites, convert that
traffic to leads or sales, and then measure
success in real numbers. There was also a Q
& A for students after this
interactive session.
The Executive Business Forum featured
Quality Assurance and Software
Testing

Quality Improvement & a practical roadmap
for implementation. IT executives,
professionals and academia also had chance to
get to know each other better during the luncheon.
IT Executive Exchange met for Leveraging
Cloud Computing!
Pie in the Sky or the Next Big Thing on the
Horizon? One of the fastest growing consumer
technology trends is cloud computing, where
data and software is housed in remote data
centers rather than on-site servers.
Microsoft's cloud computing data center in
Northlake Illinois is designed to hold up to
400,000 servers. Amazon is offering its
Elastic Computing Cloud service. The
Economist reports that “Google is said to be
operating a global network of about three
dozen data centers loaded with more than 2m
servers (although it will not confirm this).
Microsoft is investing billions and adding
up to 35,000 servers a month. Other internet
giants, such as Yahoo!, are also busy
building huge server farms."
These and other
firms are betting that IT shops will want to
move a great deal of their processing into
these ultra-efficient centers. This session
of the ITEE was held on Friday, June 12,
2009 and considered the pros and cons
of cloud computing in our unique setting of
NE Ohio.
Open Source Software. Does it work?
Does it pay? Will you regret it later?
Particularly in difficult economic
times, firms are re-assessing whether or not
it makes sense to use Open Source Software,
which appears to be significantly cheaper.
This session of the
IT
Executive Exchange included a range of
topics around Open Source, such as: how does
it fit into the overall software portfolio,
what are the (hidden) costs and benefits,
what are some of the tools and packages that
exist for various applications, security
issues, and other important factors. The ITEE began with a networking
lunch on March 27, 2009 from 1 pm to 2 pm and then took place
from 2pm to 4pm.
The Executive Business Forum
featured Umesh Ramakrishnan!
On November 10, 2008 The University of Akron
welcomed Umesh Ramakrishnan as he presented
his research at the CITe
Executive Business Forum. As a leading
headhunter for the Cleveland firm CTPartners,
Mr. Ramakrishnan has rare access to the
world’s top business executives who have
successfully climbed to the top of their
organizations. The discussion included how
to spot the most effective mentors, making the
most of networking, the advantages of taking
risks and many more inspiring, thought
provoking rules to guide a professional
career. A more detailed look at all of Umesh’s findings can be found in his new
book There’s No Elevator to the Top,
available on his website
www.noelevatortothetop.com.
Effective Benchmarks IT Can Use to Gauge
Success
Several effective IT benchmarks used by
large and small companies were discussed at
the last
IT Executive Exchange January 30,
2009. Local IT professionals talked about
how to balance the cost of maintaining
businesses’ internal IT systems with the
cost of new implementations and outside
projects, as well as the best ways to
measure end-user surveys. In addition,
attendees shared some important aspects they
consider before comparing their IT
performance with competitors. It was also
interesting to learn that many firms are
developing creative ways to link
compensation and IT metrics goals.
The Lunch and Learn Series was a great
success!
CITe hosted Anita Campbell for the
Lunch and Learn Series
event on October 16, 2008.
Our popular event started with a networking lunch
in the Murphy Room. Our guest speaker Anita

2.0 and Social Media Strategies. Some
students won books by
answering questions during the presentation. Web 2.0
concepts have led to the development and
evolution of web-based communities and
hosted services, such as social-networking
sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs,
and folksonomies.

Learn Series.
What do new graduates expect from
employers?
CITe hosted another
IT Executive Exchange on November 7,
2008. The topic was "What do new graduates
expect from employers?" It was a different
format than usual, a panel of six students
fielded questions from real business leaders
and hiring managers who are trying to
prepare for the challenges they may face
when hiring “Generation Y.” The student
panel was also able to ask questions to
their potential future employers. It was an
exciting exchange and
definitely helped foster communication
between students and employers.

Intel Ranks UA Third in U.S.
Wireless Access
Akron,
Ohio, Oct. 12, 2005 — The University of
Akron is a national leader in the use of
wireless internet technologies,
according to Intel Corp.'s second annual
survey on wireless Web access at U.S.
colleges and universities.
The University of Akron ranked third
nationally in Intel's ranking among 50
campuses with the greatest wireless
internet capability.
Only Ball State University and Western
Michigan University ranked higher than
UA. Other Ohio schools in the rankings
included Case Western Reserve University
(eighth) and the University of Dayton
(17th).
“The University of Akron has been known
for years as the most wired-for-wireless
public university in Ohio,” says UA
President Luis M. Proenza. “Now we have
achieved recognition that our efforts
are considered exceptional from a
national standpoint as well.
“Our campus network, with 950 access
points, allows the use of wireless
computers both inside the classroom and
outdoors on the campus' greens and
walkways, as well as at our Wayne
College branch campus and even at ourstadium,” Proenza explains.
The survey findings were based on the
percentage of each college campus that
is covered by wireless technology, the
number of undergraduate students and the
computer-to-student ratio for each
school. Data was gathered through
university interviews, review of public
documents and additional industry
sources; the “America's Most Connected
Campuses” ranking conducted by Princeton
Review and published in Forbes; and an
online survey that schools completed
between May 1 and Sept. 1, 2005, which
was conducted by the Center for Digital
Education and Intel.
