Final Research Project Guidelines
40% of the semester grade
Final Research projects are designed to let you explore a subject of special interest to you (whether or not we have touched on it in class) and present it orally to your colleagues in class and then in writing (or web page format). Choice of topic is part of the assignment; a good topic will choose a problem to explore rather than merely try to assemble relevant "information." You are certainly encouraged to present your research in web format, but there are no additional points merely for this.
Collaboration works well for this kind of research, but my experience is that groups larger than 2 are unwieldy. Please let me know as soon as possible if you want to work with someone.
If you do want to do a web-based project, and you would like it considered for inclusion on the Pompeii site, please consult with me earlier on choice of topic, which obviously should avoid topics already represented, and there are other considerations that need longer planning (for instance, copyright clearance).
A brief prospectus of your topic is due before Spring Vacation (if you won't be in class the Thursday, hand or send it in on Tuesday). The prospectus should state the topic and mention two or three key primary and/or secondary sources (check the online bibliography). I will get back to you before the end of vacation with reactions to your topic on its merits and whether it is doable with the resources we have available.
An outline (one page) of the project is due Thursday, April 10 in class or by email.
Oral presentation of research projects will be in the last three class meetings, Th 24 Apr, Tu 29 Apr, and Th 1 May. The aim here is to give the gist of your research: the problem, your approaches, and results. Clear verbal expression and appropriate visual material are important. The oral presentation will count for 10% of the 40% of the final project's weighting.
FINAL WRITTEN/DIGITAL PROJECTS DUE IN MY MAILBOX Th 8 May. Please don't forget to pick them up afterward!
