Minor in Classical Studies

18 credit hours, no language required

This new minor lets you pull together courses relating to the ancient Greek and Roman world from the departments of History, Philosophy, and Classical Studies, Anthropology and Archaeology.

Have you already taken one or two of our popular General Education courses?

3200:220 Introduction to the Ancient World

200:230 Sports and Society in Ancient Greece and Rome

3200:289 Mythology of Ancient Greece

Then you may already be on the way to a Minor in Classical Studies!

Who should add the Minor in Classical Studies to their transcript?

Anyone who wants to show diversity and breadth beyond a major or to highlight a group of courses in Classical Studies that don't add quite up to a major:

History majors, especially those interested in Medieval and later European history

Philosophy majors seeking the origins of Western logic and metaphysics

Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology students interested in the material culture and complex cultural tapestry of some of the most accomplished civilizations

English majors with an interest in the history of major literary forms like tragedy

Political Science majors interested in theories about politics (a Greek word!)

Education majors with interests in world civilizations, languages, and culture

Art students who want to understand the roots of Western art

Pre-law, pre-med, engineers, and everyone else who wants a change, cultural enrichment, concerned teaching and intriguing subject matter!

Requirements: 6 hours

Electives: 12 hours
