The modern event called shooting is when a competitor is required to shoot a gun at a target. In the 1996 Olympic Games, fifteen rifle, pistol, running target, and shotgun shooting events were held. This sport is quickly gaining participation and interest. Women are also allowed to participate in this event. However, the distance that men have to shoot from varies from the distance of the target for women. In the pentathlon, each participant is given 40 seconds to fire each of 20 shots at the target. There are different point allotments depending on where the bullet hits the target. The bullseye is worth 10 points. The further away from the bullseye, the less points the athlete receives. The point values decrease by one point per circle away from the target.
