The format of the second essay midterm will be the same as the first midterm, but it will probably be shorter since less material was covered-- but there is no reward for speed in finishing, so take your time.

SAMPLE ESSAYS some possible topics likely to be covered are:

(1) "Compare Greek and Roman chariot racing in equipment, personnel, setting, and purpose."

(2) Describe what you would see if you went to the Colosseum for a full
day of games. What was the social and cultural significance to the Romans of each
section of the day’s program??

(3) C. How did gladiatorial combat function in Roman society? In what
"contexts were the munera held, how often, who participated, and (most"
important) what did the combats mean to the Romans?
