Sports and Society in the Ancient World 3200:230, Fall 2006

The first midterm essay exam is based on topics we have developed during the class lectures, supported by readings in the source book and the lecture material itself.

Essay Topics: chose any two (2) to write on

the test will be open at CBT from today, Friday October 20 through Wednesday October 25.

Preparing for any of these essays is best done by going through your lecture notes for relevant material and by combing the Miller source book for evidence to support your point of view. These topics will definitely be on the exam, but you will need to pay close attention to the specific wording and slant of the question.

the relationship between athletics and war
the interrelationship between athletics and religious, esp. the festivals
the role of women in the Crown Games
measures to promote fairness in competition

What makes a good exam essay? Make one or two points that are stated clearly at the beginning. Then bring in all the supporting evidence and examples you can in the time available. Don't start out by restating the question, which is unnecessary and a waste of time. Use strong topic sentences. Don't take time to set out and rebut contrary positions until you have made the positive case first as well as you can.

From the student's perspective, 20 or 30 minutes for an essay can seem like too much time, but from professor's point of view most essays are too brief and general. So before you start to write, organize your thoughts and even make a brief outline. When writing, don't use long ponderous phrases; use list form when listing things (complete sentences, though, are the only effective way to put across a thought!
