Auditions

Although University of Akron has a direct admissions policy, The Dance Program does not directly admit students as dance majors.  All perspective dance majors enter the program provisionally and technique class placement is determined by audition.  At the end of the freshman year, students successfully passing the Freshman Jury will be admitted into The College of Fine and Applied Arts as BA Dance majors.  Students interested in pursuing a BFA Dance degree must successfully pass a BFA audition held at the end of the sophomore year.

Auditions for placement in the Dance program of the School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration consist of group classes in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and tap.  The next auditions are scheduled for November 10, 2007 and April 12, 2008.  To confirm your audition attendance, fill out and mail the linked registration form with a check for $10.00, made out to The University of Akron to the address at the bottom of the form.

Download the registration form.

Placement can also be established by taking regularly scheduled classes.  For details on scheduling an in-class placement evaluation and submitting the required $10 fee, please call our Dance office at 330-972-7948.

If you are unable to attend a placement audition, you may submit a videotape including four components listed below, showing the dancer’s full body from the front and side.  Videos must include the following elements:

  • Ballet  (center work including pirouettes from fourth and fifth positions, petite allegro, and an exercise across the floor such as grande allegro or a waltz combination)
  • Pointe (areleve combination, on two feet and one foot, and an exercise for pirouettes)
  • Modern  (center and across the floor)
  • Tap  (phrase right and left)
  • Jazz  (center and across the floor)

Submitted tapes and DVDs will not be returned.
