About Our ProgramFounded in 1967, Dance Institute of The University of Akron is a pre-professional preparatory dance program for children ages 3 through 18. Dance Institute also offers non-credit evening classes for adult students. Dance Institute is nationally recognized for its curriculum and instructional programs. Its accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Dance has been consecutively renewed since its initial review in 1984. Its degreed faculty represent extensive professional performing experience and decades of teaching expertise. Dance Institute graduates have danced professionally in New York, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio and many are also successfully pursuing college degrees throughout a broad range of dance related disciplines. Conveniently located on the campus of the University of Akron, the Dance Institute's current home is the Guzzetta Hall. This is a new, state-of-art dance facility across the street from E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Nurturing, Challenging EnvironmentDance Institute is dedicated to promoting optimal personal and physical growth and a challenging, positive environment for dancers of all ages. Classes are offered year-round–two 16-week semesters and a four-week summer intensive session. The curriculum has included classes in ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux, variations, modern, jazz, tap, Eastern European character, Spanish dance, ballroom, swing, and hip-hop. Special dance related disciplines have included Pilates, yoga, stretch, nutrition, stage make-up and hair, choreography, acting and sports medicine. Dance Institute is proud to offer live musical accompaniment of exceptional quality. Advanced level students are given the opportunity to audition for the University of Akron Dance Company performances. Their performance experience entitles them to college credit. Students at Dance Institute not only have the opportunity to pursue the artistic and technical training that will allow them to excel as dancers, they also are encouraged to develop personal and social skills that foster self-discipline, communication and collaboration, all virtues that extend beyond the dance studio and from which students will benefit throughout their lives and in all their endeavors. |
