Dance Program receives NEA grant to restage work by Doug Varone

The University of Akron’s Dance Program has received one of 25 grants given to colleges a $10,000 grant from Dance/USA and the National Endowment for the Arts to restage and universities across the country to reconstruct dances by notable American choreographers.  This spring, Doug Varone’s “Bel Canto”  will be set on UA dance students and performed as part of the 2008 UADC Spring Concert.  The grant will also enable the UA Dance Program to present master classes, open rehearsals, and various outreach activities.  Doug Varone is the founder of the acclaimed company Doug Varone and Dancers.  The company is known for its choreographic vision, versatility, and technical prowess.  Varone and his dancers are especially prized for their kinetic dexterity, musicality, and acting instincts, and are sought after for their multi-discipline residency programs and intensive professional workshops
