Scenario 2 Wanda Wanda is an eighth grader with a medical diagnosis of hypotonia along with an educational diagnosis of orthopedically impaired. The hypertonia primarily effects hand function, making it difficult for Wanda to write legibly for more than short periods. Wanda walks with no difficulty, but tires easily. Some modifications have already been made to reduce fatigue, including multiple lockers, and multiple sets of instructional materials, which can be kept near where they are to be used. Wanda experiences no other difficulties in her academic work and is well liked by both her peers and teachers. Wanda received an IQ of 130 on the WISC-R and is enrolled in mainstream honors classes. The staff, however, has discussed a change of placement to a less demanding class because of concerns over written productivity. Due to her medical condition, Wanda fatigues easily, which makes it difficult for her to keep up with the written productivity expected of honors students. Her teachers report that Wanda is able to produce 50% of her written work. Wanda’s school is a two-story building that is attached to the high school, with the computer labs located between the middle school and high school for sharing purposes. Most classrooms do not have computers, however each Science lab has a computer and each English class has two. As writing assignments have lengthened in recent years, Wanda has become increasingly unable to complete all of her work during class time. Currently, she tends to cease working 10 minutes before the end of each class, saving her work for the evening when she completes assignments on her computer at home. She works approximately 3 hours each evening and turns in completed work the following morning. Though Wanda requires no curricular modifications or special instruction for academics, she has qualified for occupational therapy services and these services are provided at the school for one half hour a week. Occupational therapy focuses on upper extremity strengthening, fine motor strengthening, and developing endurance for hand-work. Presently Wanda receives OT services in the resource room where she does her hand exercises and practices typing on a manual typewriter. Both Wanda and her parents expect that she will attend college. Next year she plans to enroll in honors classes at the high school. Wanda: Questions and Answers 1.
