HOW TO USE THIS WEBSITE

This website is a source of information for people who are seeking assistance for students with special needs. Within this site are three main modules that a viewer may choose to utilize. These modules are RESOURCES, NEEDS/TECHNOLOGY, and SCENARIOS. The following is a description of how each module functions.

RESOURCES
This area provides lists of information relevant to assistive technology and students with special needs within an educational context. Using this module requires the viewer to click on one of many links provided and scroll down as needed to read the information. The viewer may also type a keyword into the search engine and it will scan for information within the website for topics related to the keyword. Examples of information found in this module include:
· The law in regards to educating students with special needs (IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 1997).
· Vocabulary with definitions as it relates to special education and assistive technology.
· Lists of Assistive Technology Devices including a picture when available and a description of how to use it, where to get it, and the price range.
· A Listing of Social Groups and Government and Non-Profit Organizations who may be of further assistance including contact information.
· Links to Other Websites where additional information may be found.
· A List of Educational Professionals who are identified as “key people” to contact in a viewer’s own school district to initiate the process of receiving assistive technology.

NEEDS/TECHNOLOGY

This part of the website will help the viewer find examples of various assistive technology devices based on the students’ needs or area of deficiency. Once a “needs” category is clicked, such as “Writing,” the module will display a picture and description of some assistive technology devices that may help the student.

The more information gathered about the student with special needs, the easier it will be to choose an assistive device. Keep in mind the students’ abilities/disabilities, the learning environment, and the task that the student must perform. The devices are categorized by the task for which it is needed.

The procedure includes clicking on a “needs” category, and viewing the list of assistive technology devices. One may click on a link that provides information on where to find such a device and the price range.

SCENARIOS

This module may be best suited for pre-service teachers who are learning to recognize the special needs of a student in an educational environment. It is an interactive learning program which “tests” the viewer on how accurately he or she can analyze a special needs student.

The viewer must click on one scenario, read the description of a student in a difficult learning situation, then click on the student’s correct “learning need/deficiency” from a list of choices at the bottom of the scenario. The module will respond by letting the viewer know if it is the correct or incorrect choice giving evidence from the story.

A scenario may be chosen by scrolling down a list and clicking on one, or by typing in the title (a student’s name) into the search engine.

A SAMPLE SCENARIO is provided with the correct answer given and a description of evidence from the story to support the correct answer.
