Private Tutoring

Studying with a private tutor provides individualized attention...

Working one-on-one with an experienced ESL tutor ensures that your individualized needs will be met. Your tutor can help with speaking, pronunciation, reading, listening, vocabulary development, writing, culture training... whatever language skill YOU wish to improve.

At your first formal session, your tutor will

  • interview you to find out what language skills you want to develop and why you think tutoring is the best solution for you

  • evaluate your language ability to decide what materials and activities are best for you.

Together with your tutor, you will develop a plan of instruction that includes

  • your goals and objectives

  • the number of hours to meet each week

  • the materials needed

  • the location for the tutoring sessions

  • ways to judge the effectiveness of the tutoring

Studying with a private tutor is convenient...

Tutoring sessions can be held in your home, at your place of business, or in Olin Hall at The University of Akron. The meeting times and number of sessions can be flexible to suit your schedule.

Studying with a private tutor is an excellent value...

For sessions held at The University of Akron, the tutoring rate per hour is only $60.00. If the sessions are held at your house or place of business, there may be an additional cost for the tutor's travel time.

Applying for the ELI's Private Tutoring is easy...

Contact Martha McNamara at 330-972-7544 or at mmcnamara@uakron.edu. Ms. McNamara will arrange a time to meet with you to discuss your goals for the tutoring sessions and to determine the ways in which the ELI can help you reach those goals. After this preliminary meeting, you will be assigned a tutor, and your formal tutoring sessions will begin.
