The University of Akron

Founded in 1870, The University of Akron is one of the largest state universities in Ohio. More than 23,000 students attend The University of Akron, including about 700 students from approximately 101 different countries.

The main campus, in the heart of Akron, Ohio, has 80 buildings on 180 acres. Landmarks include the Goodyear Polymer Center, the E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall and Buchtel Hall.

The University of Akron has two 15-week semesters, the first beginning in August and the second in January. Classes are also offered in the summer.

The University of Akron offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and areas of study; more than 100 master's degree options; 17 doctoral degree programs; and four law degrees. The University has about 700 full-time faculty members, about three-quarters of whom hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their fields.

Applying to The University of Akron

To be considered for admission, you must submit:
  • a University of Akron application form with the required fees
  • transcripts of previous course work and grades. Graduate aplicants must provide records of undergraduate course work; undergraduate applicants must provide records from secondary school.
  • evidence of having earned the highest degree necessary for admission. Graduate applicants must have already earned an undergraduate degree; undergraduate applicants must have earned a high school diploma.
  • proof of English proficiency
Admission to some degree programs may require additional documents or test scores (e.g., the GMAT for an MBA).

If you are applying from overseas and will enter the U.S. on an F-1 student visa, you must also submit proof that you have enough funds to cover your expenses while you are in the U.S.

    English Language Requirements for Graduate Students: Five Alternatives to Demonstrate English Proficiency

    International students, permanent residents and U.S. citizens whose native language is not English must provide evidence of their English language ability in order to be fully admitted to graduate studies. There are five different measures that you can use to demonstrate your English proficiency; you must meet ONE of these requirements to be fully admitted.

    1. TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL.

        The following departments require a higher standard of proficiency: the Ph.D. program in Urban Studies & Public Affairs requires a TOEFL of 570/88; English and History require a TOEFL of 580/92; and Biomedical Engineering requires a TOEFL of 590/96.

        CONDITIONS: TOEFL scores more than two years old will not be accepted.

    2. IELTS: International English Language Testing System
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: A minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP Education Australia.

        CONDITIONS: IELTS scores more than two years old will not be accepted.

    3. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE at The UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: For graduate applicants, successful completion is defined as earning a final GPA of 3.0 in a full course of study at the Advanced level and achieving a minimum score of 500/61 on the TOEFL OR a score of 9 or 10 on the ELI-ASSET.

        CONDITIONS: The English Language Institute is The University of Akron's intensive (20 hour a week) program in English for academic purposes. Courses are offered every Fall, Spring, and Summer according to the university's academic calendar.

    4. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of ACADEMIC WORK in a U.S. INSTITUTION of HIGHER EDUCATION
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion is defined as completing 24 credit hours of upper-level undergraduate or 18 credit hours of graduate course work while maintaining a 3.0 GPA in full-time, continuous studies.

        CONDITIONS:The credits must be earned at a U.S. university or college in which English is the language of instruction. Applicants must submit original transcripts of their course work.


    5. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of ACADEMIC WORK in an INSTITUTION of HIGHER EDUCATION OUTSIDE the U.S.
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion is defined as completing an undergraduate or graduate program at a university outside the United States in which English is the language of administration and instruction. English must be used for all administrative functions and for all areas of instruction (with the exception of foreign language courses) including course lectures, materials, discussions, readings, and writing assignments.

        CONDITIONS: Applicants must submit an original official document from the undergraduate or graduate institution certifying that all of the administrative functions and instruction are conducted in English. The document must be signed by an officer of the institution and carry an official seal.

        The Associate Dean of the Graduate School at The University of Akron will review the submitted documentation and inform the applicant if he/she has satisfied the English requirement. The decision will be final.

        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: A minimum score of 69 on the MELAB, which is administered only by the University of Michigan and its authorized official examiners in the US and Canada.

    4. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE at The UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: For undergraduate applicants, successful completion is defined as earning a final GPA of 2.7 in a full course of study at the Advanced level or 3.3 in a full course of study at the High Intermediate level AND achieving a minimum score of 480/54 on the TOEFL OR a score of 9 or 10 on the ELI-ASSET.

        CONDITIONS: The English Language Institute is The University of Akron's intensive (20 hour a week) program in English for academic purposes. Courses are offered every Fall, Spring, and Summer according to the university's academic calendar.

    5. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of ACADEMIC WORK in a US. INSTITUTION of HIGHER EDUCATION
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion is defined as completing 24 credit hours of course work and maintaining good standing in full-time, continuous studies.

        CONDITIONS: The credits must be earned at an accredited U.S. university or college in which English is the language of instruction. Applicants must submit original transcripts of their course work and a written request to waive the English language requirement.


    6. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of a HIGH SCHOOL in OHIO
        SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion is defined as passing all the sections of the 12th Grade Ohio Proficiency Test.

        CONDITIONS: Applicants must submit proficiency test results and a written request to waive the English language requirement.

College of Engineering

    The University is famous for its College of Engineering, which offers bachelor's (B.S.), master's (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, and master's (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Biomedical Engineering.

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

    The first college of its kind, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering includes the departments of polymer science and polymer engineering, the Institute of Polymer Science, and the Institute of Polymer Engineering.

College of Business Administration

    The College of Business Administration offers bachelor's degrees in the areas of accounting, finance, marketing, and advertising. Each of these degrees is available with a co-major in international business.

    In addition, the college offers the following master's degrees: Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Science in Management, and Master of Taxation.

College of Arts and Science

    The College of Arts and Sciences offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in a wide range of subjects -- computer science, biology, sociology, urban studies, political science, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, philosophy, and many more. The College of Arts and Sciences is home to the English Language Institute.

College of Education

    The College of Education offers a variety of programs to prepare the teachers of tomorrow. Its academic departments include Counseling, Curricular and Instructional Studies, Educational Foundations and Leadership, and Sport Science and Wellness Education.

College of Nursing

    The College of Nursing offers baccalaureate, master, and Ph.D. degree programs. Committed to promoting the values of excellence, diversity, and unity, the College seeks diversity among students, faculty, staff and administrators.

College of Fine and Applied Arts

    The College of Fine and Applied Arts offers a diversity of graduate and undergraduate degree programs ranging from music and dance to art and theater; from speech-language pathology and audiology to communications; from family and consumer sciences to social work.

    Offering two-year associate degrees and four-year baccalaureate degrees, Summit College prepares students for jobs in industry, business, government agencies, health-care and human service.
