Comparing the U-ADEPT to the TSE
Fulfilling the English Requirement for a Teaching Assistantship at The University of Akron
Prospective international teaching assistants at The University of Akron can demonstrate their speaking proficiency in one of two ways:
-
with a score of 50 or higher on the Test of Spoken English, which is administered by Educational Testing Services.
OR
- with a passing score on the U-ADEPT.

| Direct: The test-taker meets face toface with two test administrators and interacts with them throughout the test. The entire test is audio-taped.
| Semi-direct: The test-taker responds to taped prompts delivered over the phone; his or her repsonses are auidio-taped. There is no interaction with a live person.

| Test Format
| Tasks:
- Respond to two questions, each eliciting a 3-minute informal discussion with the test administrators.
- Participate in two role plays with one of the test administrators (3 minutes each).
- Conduct a teaching simulation on a topic in your graduate field with two live audience members (15 minutes).
Tasks:
- Tell a story based on a six-picture sequence and answer a related question.
- Describe a graph and answer a relalted question.
- Respond to two questions about ideas.
- Respond to three questions by taking the part of someone in a workplace situation.
