Introduction

The University of Akron's Center for Environmental Studies, located in Crouse Hall 215, was founded in 1970 to encourage multidisciplinary approaches to address environmental issues and resolve environmental problems. The Center is a cooperative effort of several departments including biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, economics, education, geography, geology, history, library, political science, and sociology. There are about ninety affiliated faculty. The Center provides opportunities for scientists, educators, students and special interest groups to work together on issues of environmental concern. In recent years the Center has directed: an undergraduate and graduate certificate program of study; fielded responses to local inquiries regarding environmental problems; and sponsored workshops and seminars on environmental issues.
