The next set of 5 slides illustrate modern mine reclamation practices. Although the land is not restored to its original state, significant progress has been made in reducing the problems associated with surface mining. Unfortunately strict reclamation laws were not placed on the books till the 1970s, so there are a large number of sites, now abandoned, which were never reclaimed.
