The majority of coal mined in the U.S. (88%) is used for the generation of electricity. Approximately 50 percent of the electricity generated in the U.S. is from coal.
The major advantages of coal are its cost and availability. Coal is the least expensive of the fossil fuels. Other than hydroelectric generation it is the most economical source of electricity. Coal is readily available. It is estimated that the U. S. has over a 200 year supply of coal. The disadvantage is the effect of burning coal on air quality. Burning coal releases sulfur, which causes acid rain, particulate matter, and carbon dioxide. Coal is considered the major contributor of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which has been linked to the greenhouse effect and global warming (see later sections)
One way of addressing the negative aspects of burning coal is Clean Coal Technology which allows for the removal impurities and burning of coal more efficiently, resulting in lowering sulfur and carbon dioxide emissions. Unfortunately much of the clean coal technology is still in the development or pilot plant stage. Political and economic incentives are needed before it becomes common practice.
