Slide 1
A number of alternative energy sources have been investigated due to growing concern over global warming and the limited supply of fossil fuels.

Slide 2
The internal energy of the earths crust is referred to as geothermal energy. Use of this energy source ranges from heat pumps used to lower our heating bills, to the generation of electricity by tapping the steam of hydrothermal systems.

As early as the late 1800s it became apparent that the earth must have an internal source of energy.

Slide 5
The earths internal source of heat is the radioactive decay of unstable isotopes. The decay of U-238 to Th-234 gives of an alpha particle and energy. A number of unstable isotope occur within the earths crust and as they spontaneously decay they produce energy.
