US energy consumption is greater than production. The level of consumption has been steadily rising however the level of production has remained fairly constant. The difference between production and consumption is reflected in the imports which have been rising over the past decade.
Energy consumption is highest for the developed nations and lowest for developing nations.
Oil is the most expensive of the fossil fuels, coal is the cheapest. The price of oil has fluctuated significantly in the past decade, it's price being controlled by the more volatile international market. In contrast, coal which is produced domestically has much more stable pricing.
