Notes on this Site

This site was developed to be used as a study guide for students taking Historical Geology 3370-102, which is offered during the spring semester. This is an introductory level course with Physical Geology as a prerequisite. The majority of the students are either geology majors or secondary and primary education majors.

The lecture presentations are an outline of the lectures with copies of most of the figures I show in class. The presentations were originally developed in 1996 using Astound, and were converted to WWW format in 1998. These pages were created with a Power Macintosh 6100/60. I am not proficient in HTML, as a matter of fact my vocabulary consist of less than 1 dozen commands. Therefore, you will not find any fancy spinning hammers on this site. Because the lecture files contain a number of images they may take a long time to down load. The lecture files range in size from 70 to 800 K and average 370 K. Most of the photos came from Kodak Photo-CD's. I sharpened the images and adjusted the colors using a very low cost program, Expert Color Paint for Macintosh. Most of the diagrams were scanned on a flat bed scanner, I used a variety of programs to clean up the images, my favorites being Canvas 3.0 and Color paint. To minimize the size of the images, prior to converting them to gif files, the resolution was converted to 72 dpi and they were sized so as to be less than 6 inches wide. The photos were converted to 8 bit (256 colors) and most of the diagrams were converted to 4 bit (16 colors).

The original sources of the images are listed below. Images not listed are original images by the author (A. Foos).
