1. After watching the video “Tibet, Where Continents Collide” write a 1-2 page essay (preferably typed) describing the sequence of events that formed the Himalayan Mountains and Tibetan Plateau. Your essay should include the major events and the evidence (describe the rocks) for these events.
2. After reading “Birth of the Mountains-The
geologic Story of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.” (Clark, 2002; 02.pdf; http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/birth/ ) write a 1-2
page essay (preferably typed) describing the sequence of events that formed the
Appalachian Mountains. Your essay should include the major events and the
evidence (describe the rocks) for these events. (You may also watch the video “The
Southern Appalachians: A Changing World” available in the GRC.)
3. Use reading material available on your Historical CD
and/or the web to write a 1-2 page essay on how teaching about the
Creationism/Intelligent Design versus Evolution controversy can be used to
illustrate to students the “Nature of Science”
Today (Friday, April 8) the geology department is hosting a talk on “Climate Instability: Sun, Sea, and Snow” by Dr. Jerry McManus, the JOI/USACC Distinguished Lecturer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts. The talk is open to the public and will be in CRH 120 at 3:30. I will give extra credit points to anyone in the class that attends.
Next Thursday (April 4th) there will be a talk by Dr. Patricia Kelly titled “Evolution and Creation: Conflicting or Compatible?” at the College of Wooster. The talk is at 8:00 PM in Wishart Hall, Lean Lecture Room. If you are interested in attending and need transportation please contact Dr. Park (lepark@uakron.edu, CRH 63, X-7633) who will be taking a departmental van to Wooster, departing at 7:00 PM. I will give extra credit points to anyone in the class that attends.
