The Xixia Basin Dinosaur Egg Site is well known for the
amount and variety of eggs and eggs with fossilized embryos. Nearly 200 sites of dinosaur eggs around
the world are known. Most of these
sites are in China
and the most famous one is the Xixia Basin Dinosaur Egg Site of the Late
Cretaceous age. The largest known
eggs are found here. They are 46 cm
long and resemble giant grains of rice.
Generally scientists only find jumbles of bones, if anything, inside
an egg. However, intact embryos are found
at this site. The egg site is within
a few hours driving distance from Henan
University in Kaifeng,
our hosts for this field investigation.

xixiaensis is the largest known dinosaur egg. The name reflects its elongate shape and discovery in Xixia
Basin.

The Songshan Geological
Park is located in the northern
part of the province and is famous for its complete outcrops of stratigraphic
sections spanning a period of 3.5 billion years. The boundaries of angular unconformities were shaped by three
Precambrian tectonic events. These
were the Songyang movement (2.5 billion years ago) the Zhongyue movement (1.8
billion years ago), and the Shaolin Movement (570 million years ago). With these tectonic disturbances,
stratigraphic sections of Archean, Proterozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenzoic were
brought together. It is generally
known as the "geo-family of five generations" and is a textbook of
geological history.

The Yuntaishan Geological
Park is located in the central
part of the province (northern Xiuwu
County) in the city of Ziaozuo. The tectonic disturbance, together with
the subsequent uplift and down warping, produced many unique stratigraphic
and structural features in the Middle Proterozoic to Early Paleozoic
carbonate and clastic sedimentary series.
Some of the famous ones are Archaen overturned and close spaced
recumbent folds, and gorges of various widths eroded out of vertical joints.
