Introduction

image11.gif (114071 bytes)The University of Akron's Geology Field Camp will be offered again this coming summer in South Dakota & Wyoming from May 26 - July 4, 2007.

Geology Field Camp I (GFC1; GEOL 493/593) May 26-June 17, 2007 and Geology Field Camp II (GFC2; GEOL 494/594) June 18-July 4, 2007 are two 3-credit courses which can be taken to meet Geology Field Camp requirements. .

 

 

GFC1 is intended for students finishing their Sophomore, or Junior years: GFC2 (or GFC 1 & 2) can be taken by students finishing their Junior or Senior years. These courses place an emphasis on the collection, recording and interpretation of field data. We recognize that this will be the first major field course for many students and we aim to make all participants proficient and confident field geologists.

Transportation:
University vans will leave Akron on Saturday, May 26 and return Sunday June 17th (Field Camp I only). Students can be picked up and dropped off along the route. All exercises will be conducted from university vehicles. Students can drive their own vehicles to and from camp locations.
Locations & Housing:
GFC1 is located in the Black Hills, SD, (South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City) and the Bighorn Basin, WY (Northwest College, Powell). (For 2007) GFC2 is also located in Powell and at the Miracle Mile Ranch in the Seminoe Mountains, south-central WY. All graded exercises will be completed at these locations. We will spend approximately 6 days on field trips during GFC 1 & 2.
Staff:
Geology Field Camp courses are taught by faculty and graduate students of the Department of Geology, University of Akron. Student: Instructor ratios are ~ 6:1.
