Applications are now being taken in the History Department office, Olin 201, for the scholarships listed here. These awards vary in amount, and are based solely on academic performance, not on need.
The Graduate Committee annually awards assistantships to M.A. and Ph.D. candidates according to the merits of their applications. Students may renew their assistantships as long as they demonstrate competence in the classroom and solid progress toward their degrees (Solid Progress is a GPA of at least 3.25). The Graduate Committee assesses student progress in the spring of each academic year. Assistantships for M.A. candidates can be held for two academic years only, not including summer sessions. The deadline for admission with an assistantship is February 1. M.A. assistantships can be held for two academic years and Ph.D. assistantships for four years.
In past years, the department has obtained additional assistantships for master's-level students through employment in the University Archives and in the multimedia program of the University's General Studies curriculum.
These are exclusively merit-based scholarships that the department's Scholarship Committee gives annually to new and returning students whom the Graduate Committee has recommended. Awards normally range from $1,200 to $3,200.
