Get the Edge on Scholarships at UA …..
On the afternoon of November 20, 2009 and again, during the morning and afternoon of February 20, 2009, the Honors College of The University of Akron will host scholarship interview days for students who will be new freshmen in fall 2010..
Early admission (non-binding) candidates will be invited to the event on Scholarship Friday, November 20, 2009. See early admission. If you apply and are offered admission to UA’s Honors College after attending this event, we guarantee that you will receive an offer from the Honors College of at least a $1,000 potentially renewable scholarship for use at UA.
Those who attend one of these two half-day sessions will be interviewed by a team of two Honors College representatives: faculty and/or staff. Some students will receive the exact scholarship amount guaranteed, as scholarship competition is keen. Some students will be offered larger scholarships from the Honors College, in which case the $1,000 is a part of the larger scholarship and is not additional. The Honors scholarship can be combined, however, with offers from other offices at UA, such as the Office of Student Financial Aid. Our guarantee is extended only to those students who attend our Invitation to Excellence Interview Day.
How large are the Scholarships?
They range in size from hundreds of dollars to nearly full academic scholarships worth $44,000 over four years. Tuition at UA is relatively low in any case, and some scholarships include fees, room and board -- and for others, even books. Join the Honors College and you could receive a high quality college education for a relatively low cost.
Do I have to attend the event on one of those days?
To get the edge on scholarships: Yes. There are opportunities to interview with the Honors College at other times, but without the guarantee
How many Scholarships are available?
UA offers literally hundreds of scholarships at different levels each year. Some of these are from the Honors College (see Honors College Scholarships) and others are from the financial aid office, or from individual colleges/departments at the University. For example, the Physics Department has many scholarships available for students planning to study physics at UA.
The University also offers at least 50 "Scholarships for Excellence" per year ($6,000 per year) , and six Lisle M. Buckingham/Orr Family Honors College Scholarships providing tuition and fees, room & board. All of these are available to students in any major of study.
You won't be eligible for scholarships from the Honors College unless you apply to the Honors College. Of course, UA has many different kinds of scholarships. Factors such as leadership, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need are often considerations in many scholarships.
Will I be required to join the Honors College at UA if I attend the Invitation to Excellence event?
You are free to choose, although the Honors College is the sponsor of these events and students who are invited would be of honors quality. You cannot receive an Honors College scholarship unless you join. Additionally, there are many benefits to students in the Honors College beyond the Honors scholarships, and those benefits are a good reason to join the Honors College.
Minimum Requirements for the Invitation to Excellence events .
Students should have academic records that indicate
Current high school cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5;
ACT composite score of at least 27 or SAT combined score of at least 1800.
Excellent high school rank in class
Satisfying the above criterion makes a student eligible but does not assure an invitation to Scholarship Saturday.
How does this interview relate to the BS/MD interviews?
Students who are invited for a BS/MD interview should attend that interview instead of theInvitation to Excellence interview. For university scholarships, the BS/MD interview will apply. Students who receive a $1,000 scholarship from the BS/MD program do not receive an additional amount for completing the Invitation to Excellence interview.
