Course Description:
“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there."
This quote from English writer L. P. Hartley aptly applies to American History too.  The American past is in many ways a foreign place, starkly different than today’s 21st century world, despite that fact that our present-day society is a direct result of that history. This course examines that “foreign” past, and how various types of Americans thought, reacted and behaved as they faced a multitude of changes and crises from colonization through the Civil War and its aftermath.   This class will explore broad historical themes such as slavery, westward expansion, religious evangelicalism, nationalism and industrialism. Course assignments will consist of readings, class discussions, papers and essay exams, all meant to enliven students’ historical awareness and knowledge, and sharpen individual critical thinking.
