New 5-year BS/MSA Program in Accounting Targeted for Honors Students

Effective fall 2006, the G. W. Daverio School of Accountancy will offer an accelerated BS/MS Accountancy program that should be highly attractive to honors students who wish to pursue careers in accounting. This BS/MS Program will allow honors and other outstanding accounting majors to complete both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in accounting with 150 credits. To become a Certified Public Accountant, Ohio and practically every other state require 150 credit hours of college credit. Thus, the program satisfies all the pre-certification education requirements to become a professional accountant. Students will still need to sit for the CPA examination but they will have both BS and MS degrees by the time they take the exam. Students in the accelerated program will be admitted to the graduate school by the start of their senior year and will take nine credits of graduate courses that will count toward both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Students who plan to pursue this accelerated program should read the attached document and also talk with Dr. Sharon Kimmell (Phone: 330 972-6088; email: skimmell@uakron.edu) prior to the start of their junior year.

5-year BS/MS program in Applied Mathematics Targeted for Honors Students

Do you have many interests?  Are you undecided about a major?  Then studies in applied mathematics may be just right for you.  The field of applied mathematics offers an array of varied and challenging work.  Professionals use theories and techniques, such as mathematical modeling and computational methods, to solve practical problems in such diverse fields as business, biology, medicine, management, economics, government, computer science, physics, psychology, engineering and social science.  Mathematicians collaborate with professionals in other fields of study to achieve common solutions to problems.  After successfully completing an interdisciplinary five-year bachelor/master’s program in applied mathematics, a student will receive at the same time a bachelor’s degreeand a master’s degree in applied mathematics.  The program gives students comprehensive training in analysis as well as applied and computational mathematics.  Students will be trained in an interdisciplinary team environment.  This teamwork, combined with a broad range of engaging and challenging courses, prepares students for careers in today’s industrial and scientific environments, or for continued study at the doctoral level.  For more information about the program, please read the attached document.  A sample curriculum is also available.  Students interested in the program should contact Dr. Jerry Young,  gwyoung@uakron.edu.
