Graduate Fellowships
Welcome! This website introduces University of Akron students and alumni to nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. The Honors College offers guidance and assistance to students interested in applying for these external awards. Students may also apply for scholarships on campus through the Office of Student Financial Aid or from your academic department. If you are interested in or curious about these or other prestigious scholarships, please contact Adam Smith, the Honors College Scholarship Advisor.
Students from the Honors College have received Goldwater Scholarships or honorable mention awards for Goldwater Scholarships, James Madison Fellowships, NSF Graduate Fellowships, and others.
Congratulations to Jared Hicks, Buckingham Scholar, who received an Honorable Mention in the 2006-2007 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Competition. Majoring in Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Hicks conducts interdisciplinary research and hopes to establish himself as an ambassador for science in the academic community. The Goldwater Scholarship is a highly competitive undergraduate scholarship for students in the fields of science, math, and engineering.
The Honors College also recognizes 2004 distinguished alumnus Matthew Shepard, University Honors Scholar and winner of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Early in his undergraduate career, Shepard showed extensive aptitude in research and academics. Shepard worked closely with University of Akron professors and students in the Department of Physics, publishing several works, which eventually aided him in becoming a Goldwater Scholar. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to high-achieving undergraduates in the natural sciences, math, and engineering.
