Allowing web access to selected UAnet IDs

As a University of Akron Information Provider, you can restrict access to your documents to selected users with valid UAnet IDs. This method will permit access to your site to specific individuals, but deny access to everyone else. The browser will prompt for the required information when access to your restricted site is attempted. Web sites needing this type of restriction should be hosted on the secure server.

What is a "secure" server and how can I host my documents on it?

Please read Restricting Access to all UAnet IDs

How do I specify the users who may have access?

The list of IDs to be granted access is maintained in a special access list text file in the directory to be restricted. This access list file is a text file maintained by you, the account owner. The file contains one ID per line -- each ID must be an actual UAnet ID and not an e-mail alias.

How do I apply the access restriction?

Access restriction by UAnet ID requires a change in the configuration of the web server software. You can contact Technical Services to have it turned on for your site. This request must be made by the account owner (the original requestor to whom the account was issued).

The restriction can be applied to a single directory, or it can also "cascade" down through your subdirectories. If the restriction is applied to subdirectories, each must contain an access list file. These separate files do not have to contain the same list of IDs, a feature which allows you to grant access to different documents to different groups of people.
