Print Indexes

The Library makes available several indexes that make it possible to locate articles in newspapers from around the country. Some are in printed format and some are computer databases available at all of the library's workstations. Once you have found your article citations, check the holdings of the particular newspaper in the library's catalog so that you may retrieve the complete article.

The following newspapers have print indexes in Bierce Library. The indexes are located in stacks adjacent to the Reference Desk on the first floor.

All of these resources are available from workstations in the University Libraries and through the Library's network. Some of them contain the full-text of newspaper articles.

Newspaper Source - This database covers the recent years of The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Atlanta Constitution, Houston Post, Call & Post, Guardian, Detroit News, Denver Post, and other major newspapers. It provides a citation and abstract for each article.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - This database provide s the full text of articles in many major newspapers, including the Plain Dealer and most of the newspapers indexed in Newspaper Abstracts.

Ethnic Newswatch - This database provides the full text of articles in ethnic newspapers from around the country. Some of the ethnic groups represented are Native American, African American, and Hispanic.

Fee-based computer searching is available for the recent years of over one hundred newspapers, including the Akron Beacon Journal, Columbus Dispatch, Plai n Dealer, and Cincinnati Enquirer. Ask at the Reference Desk for more information.
