    Introduction

John S. Knight bequeathed all of his "papers, speeches, manuscripts, letters, copies of letters, photographs, awards, memorabilia and other items of historic interest" to The University of Akron for inclusion in its Archives. For several years following Knight's death in 1981, the materials were transferred from various sources to the University.

In 1985 the Knight Foundation made a grant to the University for analysis, storage and display of the collection. Charles Whited, a staff member of the Miami Herald, used the papers in writing a biography, published in 1987.
