Mission Statement

Mortar Board, Inc., a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service, creates opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.

Purpose

"To facilitate cooperation among senior honor societies, to contribute to the self-awareness of our members, to promote equal opportunities among all peoples, to emphasize the advancement of the status of women, to support the ideals of the university, to advance a spirit of scholarship, to recognize and encourage leadership, to provide service and to establish the opportunity for a meaningful exchange of ideas as individuals and as a group."

Membership

Membership is based on outstanding scholarship, leadership and service. Members must be at least in the final term of their junior year or have equivalent status.  All members must meet predetermined local scholastic requirements (at least in the upper 35% of the class), in most cases a straight B average, and must have demonstrated leadership abilities and service to the university and/or community.  Chapter size will be determined by each individual chapter. New member selection is performed at the beginning of each Spring semester. The student body will be notified when the application process is underway. Applications can be found in the Honors Program office, located in the Honors Complex (188 S. College St.).

Chapter

Recognize scholarship; work with and assist the administration on our campus; sponsor leadership, vocational and other types of conferences and seminars for students; suggest or initiate worthwhile campus projects; address and initiate activities related to the student-selected National Project.

Pierian Chapter Service / Social Events

Our annual service event is the Mortar Board Book Drive, where we collect unwanted books from faculty and the book store and sell them, on campus, for a very discounted price (usually $1 per book). Each year we also sponsor a Favorite Faculty Tea, where each Pierian Chapter member is asked to invite a favorite faculty member to be recognized for their outstanding service to the University of Akron. Other service and social events are planned throughout the year with group input taken into consideration.
