Selenium

Discovered in 1817, Selenium is itself a silvery metallic allotrope or red amorphous powder, which is less stable. It is used in photoelectric cells, photocopiers, solar cells, and semiconductors.

Selenium is commonly found in sulfide ores, from which it is extracted. In the U.S., the southeastern region has the lowest soil concentrations while the Rocky Mountain area has the highest.
