The 2001 University of Akron Summer Program in the Alps' First Report will be posted shortly, once the students have arrived. Students are scheduled to leave Cleveland on Friday, May 11, arriving in Geneva (Switzerland) on Saturday morning, May 12th.

Prof. Jeantet arrived in Faverges today, Thursday, two days before the group, in order to make last-minute arrangements for the Program.

The University's Office of the Controller has wired the Program funds to the bank in France, so that we can get started in earnest. Many thanks to Controller Ruth Matty, without whose help we could not have accomplished this task so easily.

Info for the students: the concert planned for Saturday evening has been postponed til Wednesday. This will give you a chance to catch up on your sleep Saturday evening!

Information about the weather in Faverges is posted below.

Weather forecast for the weekend of May 12-13

The weather today Thursday was in the 60s, with occasional thunderstorms.

Saturday, May 12th : Temperatures range from the low 50s at night to the high 70s in the day. Partly cloudy, no rain is forecast.

For up-to-date weather information for Annecy, which is located just a few miles down the valley from Faverges, click on the sun/cloud icon below.

On the Annecy weather page, temperatures are displayed in degrees Celsius. To get Farenheit equivalent, a quick & dirty way is to double the Celsius temperature and add 30. This is close enough for most purposes...For example, 27° Celsius, doubled, gives 54, to which we add 30, which yields 84° degrees Farenheit.
The correct formula,
[ (C x 9/5) + 32 = F ] gives a result of 81° Farenheit. The quick & dirty method is clearly close enough for practical purposes.

Once the students are all safely home with their French families, an illustrated report will be posted on the "First Report" page. It should be online Saturday evening..
