1997 UA Trip to Faverges

Second Report, (Wednesday, May 21)

After a walk around Faverges on Sunday morning (and the obligatory group photo below), the students went home for lunch. Patty and Grace found that their missing suitcases had, in the meantime, found their way to Faverges from Cleveland. After lunch, many of the students quickly discovered the simple joys of spending hours chatting in the local café, where their teacher found them cheerfully engaged in conversation late Sunday afternoon. Monday being a national holiday, students had one more day to recover from jet lag before starting classes on Tuesday.

Wednesday is market day in Faverges; vendors tour the region, stopping in a different market square each day. Over sixty different vendors, each offering different goods as varied as cheese, meats, army surplus goods, clothing, dried fruit, beds and tables, and natural "organic" foodstuffs, ply their wares with good cheer. The students are seen below leaving the classroom building (arched doorway), then tasting saucisson de cheval (horsemeat salami) with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

Several of the students met their French host families at the market, as it is customary to shop here for the freshest and ripest fruit and vegetables that can be found. Fresh artichokes are arriving from Brittany, melons are now coming in from Spain, and, of course, the local cheeses are at their best in May and June as the cows have been grazing the fresh and flavorful spring grasses for the past six weeks.

On Thursday afternoon the group and their French host families will be received at a Town Hall ceremony, though the Mayor, who is running for Congress, may not be there: elections are Sunday.
